Botanical Bonds
Human-Plant Interactions in Weronika Anna Rosa’s Art
Weronika Anna Rosa is a visual botanical artist who explores the relationship between plants and humans. Originally from Poland, she is currently based in Lisbon, Portugal.
Growing up in a family of scientists and artists, Weronika was surrounded by fresh flowers and potted plants, which naturally became the central theme of her work. She uses gouache on Kraft paper and Japanese golden ink to bring her visions to life.
Before beginning each painting, Weronika immerses herself in studying the plant through images and real-life observation. She creates detailed sketches and color palettes. Her paintings are incredibly detailed, yet they do not strive to be exact replicas of real-life plants; instead, they represent a romanticized fantasy, an obsession with the essence of a flower.
The titles of her works are rich in metaphor, such as Spectrum of Love for a painting of a Japanese chrysanthemum which embodies the idea of variation across a continuum, Adaptation for Brazilian orchids renowned for their adaptability, and Duality for Costa Rican anthurium, which is known as a hermaphrodite flower, possessing both female and male reproductive organs.
Interestingly, most of the paintings are the size of an average human — because, after all, we and they are equals.
