Various entrances
With her gramophone flowers, Various entrances, Artist Netaly Aylon opens up a portal to another celestial place.
Various Entrances is an installation of real flower brass casts. It is part of an ongoing research process, originating from the Hermetic theory - a late antiquity tradition of philosophical and religious beliefs. The theory holds that "as above, so below" - that is, the different levels of reality (from the microcosm to the macrocosm) are parallel, dependent and influence each other. From a morphological point of view, this can be seen in the analogy between different systems - the branching of the veins in the body alongside streams and rivers, the spherical shape of the planets and the human eye, and more.
The work focuses on the shape of the funnel, which has the potential of a poetic and functional manifestation, echoing through celestial, natural and human phenomena: flowers, man-made instruments (gramophone, stethoscope, trumpet, etc.), and the geometric abstraction of time-space curvature in the environment of black holes.
Sympetalous (funnel-shaped) flowers represent nature as the layer between the human and the celestial. In this work, real flowers were moulded and cast in brass. This method is used to preserve these natural ephemeral entities, alongside the possibility of changing their context through their material change. For example, using the flowers' funnel shape to test their amplification abilities and offer their transition into musical instruments.
The flowers in the installation are attached to constructions that echo structures of planetary movements, to offer their potential of becoming a portal to a celestial, inaccessible place.
Alongside, The work includes a kinetic sculpture, in which a mechanism produces sound by playing on a metal flower replica. The sound reverberates through a brass tube to a brass replica of a large Datura flower, which functions a gramophone, amplifying it.
